      IMS Database Design Workshop

Course Abstract: This course provides the student with the skills necessary to design and tune IMS database structures. Comprehensive physical design alternatives are discussed. Classroom exercises reinforce topics presented in lectures.

      Duration: 5 days

Primary Audience: Senior technical staff, including DBAs and applications and production support personnel, who need a detailed understanding of the structure of IMS full-function and Fast Path databases and their performance implications.

Prerequisites: A working knowledge of the IMS database environment; programming experience is not required.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

      • Choose the appropriate IMS database access method
      • Define optimization parameters for maximum efficiency
      • Describe the tools and techniques used in tuning existing structures

Class Format: Lecture with classroom exercises and group discussion.

Cost: In-house: $8,500 for up to 15 students; $500 for each additional student.

      Topics:

      • Sequential and Direct Access Methods (HSAM, HISAM, SHISAM, GSAM, HDAM, HIDAM)
      • Main Storage Databases (MSDBs), Data Entry Databases (DEDBs), Areas
      • RAPs, Data Cascading, RAAs, MRBN
      • Pointers (HF, HB, PCF, PCL, TF, TB)
      • Dataset Groups
      • Unkeyed Segments
      • Logical Relationships
      • Secondary Indexes
      • Logical DBDs
