      IMS System Fundamentals

      Course Abstract: This course covers the basics of IMS application programming and database implementation. It provides the application programmer and database administrator with the skills needed to implement an application in IMS. The course is technical and assumes that the student is already familiar with basic COBOL programming.

      Duration: 5 days

      Primary Audience: Application programmers and database administrators.

      Prerequisites: COBOL programming.

      Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

      • Describe the architecture of IMS batch and on-line systems
      • Code database and communications calls
      • Select appropriate logical and physical database design options
      • Trace the flow of a transaction through an IMS system
      • Implement secondary indexes and logical relationships
      • Use IMS utilities to backup, restore, and reorganize databases
      • Discuss the facilities available in IMS to provide data integrity and system availability
